Browns trade Trent Richardson to the ColtsWritten by Josh Hoffert (@WhatTheHOFF)
I don’t exactly know what the Cleveland Browns were thinking when they traded Trent Richardson to the Colts. I realize they received a first round draft pick from the deal, but still. Has Cleveland given up on the season already?
It’s not real often that you see a trade as we’ve just seen. Trent Richardson being traded to the Indianapolis Colts for a first round draft pick seems absurd on the Browns side of things. Just take a look at Richardson, he is ideally built to be nothing but a great running back.
Of course his numbers aren’t the best, he plays for the Browns. Through his 17 games in the NFL, he is averaging just 3.5 yards a carry. He has run for 11 touchdowns and caught another. Out of the backfield though, he averages 7.2 yards per reception. These numbers seem to be promising.
Not only that, but the dude is a beast. How much does he bench?
“I really can’t tell you the truth because I really don’t know the truth. But I did 475 easy, and they won’t let me go above 475.”
He benches 475 easily. So what exactly were the Browns thinking when they traded Richardson for a first round pick? Former Browns’ president Mike Holmgren was as confused as anyone:
“Philosophically, if I’m the coach and someone came in anywhere and did that, I’d say ‘OK, fire me, or I’m going to quit. Or we’re going to both go into the owner and talk about this and then we’ll see who’s still standing.’ “
“How do you make your team better by trading your best player?” he added. “He’s the best offensive player. He’s a valuable, valuable guy.”
I am asking the same question Mike, I am asking the same damn question.
Perhaps the Browns are trying to set themselves up to grab another quarterback in the draft? Or not, because we all know how good the Browns are at drafting quarterbacks (no offense Weeden). Not only that, but you simply do not trade your best player to do so.
I know the Browns still have Willis McGahee, but he’s been in the league for 11 seasons. That is a decently long career for a running back. They also have Bobby Rainey on the roster…whoever that is.
It seems that the Browns have already given up on the 2013 season. But what else is new? I am sure Richardson will be much happier with the Colts. WhatTheHOFF Cleveland?
